Founders Interview: Story behind ON-SESSION

It's been a year since we first opened our doors at ON-SESSION. To celebrate, we sat down with founders Tsuki and Ritsuko to hear their story.

What made you want to launch your own salon?

We have extensive experience in both Tokyo and New York City, including salon work, editorial shoots, and fashion shows. Our goal was to create a salon that effectively integrated these diverse experiences. 

ON-SESSION is filled with chic, stylish interiors. What sparked the decision to create the space?

We noticed a real divide in New York salons – either super luxurious or very DIY. Inspired by the trend of art gallery-like salon interiors in Japan, we aimed to create a space that provides both clients and staff with stylish inspiration through the salon's design, staff fashion, and curated magazines, enhancing the overall experience beyond just hair services.

What's ON-SESSION's philosophy for hair stylings? 

We believe the best hairstyles are the ones that truly complement each individual. The look that looks like their "natural beauty" is the ultimate goal.

When suggesting new hair color, we carefully analyze our clients' unique skin tones. Whether it's a touch of pink or a hint of gold, we find the ideal shade that brightens their complexion and makes the color genuinely their own.

The same philosophy applies to perms. We believe the coolest styles enhance, rather than mask, natural texture. With our extensive perm expertise, we can recommend the perfect technique to create those coveted "I woke up like this" waves.

Last summer, ON-SESSION launched ON-SESSION Nails. What inspired this brand expansion?

Working as hairstylists on editorial shoots, we've always seen hair, makeup, and nails come together to create stunning beauty looks for brands and magazines. We recognized that this collaboration creates a powerful narrative of individual taste and style.

We've met many amazing nail artists on our editorial shoots, and that's what sparked the idea to bring in Japanese gel nail services to pair with our hair services. We are excited that now we can offer a very unique, holistic beauty experience.
